Choosing A Photographer For Your Family

By Sandra McMahon

Not all photography specialists are created equal. Choosing the right one is often a confusing endeavor. However, it is an important one because photographs last a lifetime and selecting from a laundry list of photographers can seem like it takes that long. So below I have included a few tips on how to select your next photographer.

One of the most important criteria is to select an artist who has plenty of experience with the style of photography you want. You may not want to hire a wedding specialist to take pictures of you family. Each setting has it's own unique criteria that requires experience with that medium.

Anyone can press the button on an expensive camera and, given enough time, probably capture a good photo or two. A great deal of time and talent go into the computer processing and digital editing after the session is completed. Make sure you photographer is very well trained with the latest software and editing techniques.

When speaking with your potential photographers, make sure you ask them about extra fees for weekends and after hours. Your time frame is what you have to work with and you should expect your artist to accommodate that, however, review the restriction they have.

When you review there work make sure it strikes you emotionally. Many customers pour over hundreds of photos and sample pieces, however, the photographer that is right for you should instantly grab your attention. You shouldn't downplay the importance of a gut feel.

You will undoubtedly need to like and trust your artist. They will be working closely with you and your family or event. There should be an immediate element of likeability when you talk with them on the phone so be on the lookout for this.

Last, check with your candidates on a list of reference clients they have worked with in the past. Putting time into selecting from a list of potential photographers is a lengthy process but a worthwhile one as the photos may hang in your home for many, many years.
