In The Star Wars Saga, the Battle of Endor was one which had no reasonable likelihood of coming out in favor of anyone but the forces of the Dark Side. The Empire had a formidable array of weapons and machines that should have enabled them to smash any opposition - and yet, the Rebels and the Ewoks somehow managed to destroy the formidable forces arrayed against them, and ultimately destroy the Death Star. LEGO has released two sets - The LEGO Battle of Endor, and the LEGO Ewok Attack, that allow LEGO builders and Star Wars Fans to recreate this heroic struggle on their dining room table.
The plot of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, completes the Star Wars middle trilogy, with the final battle waged by the Rebels and their Ewok allies against The Empire and the forces of the Dark Side. The battle opens as Emperor Palpatine is watching the construction of the Empire's doomsday weapon, the Death Star, which is being assembled as it orbits above the Forest Moon of the Planet Endor.
When the Rebels found out from their spies that the Emperor would be present on the incomplete Death Star, they began to put together a plan for a major attack. Their spies were able to determine that the defensive systems of the Death Station were not yet operational. The key to success in the battle would be to neutralize the Death Star's defense shield control bunker, which was located on the surface of the moon.
The Rebels and the Ewoks were able to accomplish this through a combination of luck and strategy, managing to overcome the far superior forces they were facing. The keys to winning the battle were capturing one of the AT-ST Walkers, and using it against the Storm Troopers, and a series of clever traps that the Ewoks had set up. As Han Solo piloted the AT-ST against the Storm Troopers, they advanced on the Bunker and Solo, pretending to be an Imperial Pilot, convinced the Imperial Forces that they were needed in the woods to pursue the "retreating" Ewoks. This allowed them to take control of the Bunker, and destroy it.
LEGO has produced two different sets that capture the key elements of this vital struggle. The larger of the two sets, called the LEGO Battle of Endor (LEGO 8038) provides for the construction of the Defense Shield Bunker, an AT-ST Walker (which has "walking action"), one Ewok Catapult, and two Imperial Speeder Bikes. The smaller set is the LEGO Ewok Attack (LEGO 7956), which builds the Ewok's tree fortification, and a Speeder Bike.
The Battle of Endor, the larger set, contains a total of 890 pieces. Included are twelve mini-figures, including Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, two Scout Troopers, several Ewoks, two Rebel Commandos, and one Imperial Trooper. The set features a number of interesting mechanisms. The AT-ST Walker can be made to "walk" - it's not just a stationary model. The Bunker swings opens to provide user access to the inside. The Blast Doors of the bunker are opened by turning a geared mechanism, and the bunker actually has an "explosion feature" so that it can be damaged by an "explosion". Also included in the set's weapons is an Ewok Catapult, which can fling a "stone" as far away as six feet!
The smaller set of the two, Ewok Attack, has 166 pieces, and although it is a smaller set it still has some really nice elements included with it. It models the Ewoks' Tree fortification, which is constructed on two separate base plates; this means that the structure can be opened up to get access to the gadgets inside. At the top of the tree there is a device that drops out "logs" that can be used to trip the Walkers as they pass by. A catapult is also included, plus a flick-fire missile system that can be fired from the inside of the tree.
When these two sets are combined, the lucky recipient can re-create all the essential elements of the Battle of Endor. They make a great gift for the Star Wars fan, as well as for the serious LEGO builder. The sets are a good example of the increasing level of realism and detail that LEGO is designing into their special purpose sets, and of the increased play value that results from those efforts.
