As sunglasses began to emerge as a fashion trend in the early 1980's, Italian eyewear producers DeRigo decided to enter the market, and in 1983 they introduced the Police sunglasses brand into the current market. Soon to become a popular apparel and accessories house it is often forgotten that the Police brand came about from a passion for simple sunglasses designs.
The brand was originally labelled "Police" as the sunglasses were designed around what the current police force were wearing. Police is very much a lifestyle brand and it lends itself well to providing staple accessories for everyday wear. The range is not designed to be worn once or twice but as a practical and robust option for repeat use.
Attracting a more sporty and casual persona, the police brand is more of a casual approach to high-end fashion and contrasts the very bold and often over-the-top approaches of modern fashion houses. The brand today caters to both the male and female market whereas originally it only catered for men. As the male and female fashion trends continued to merge, the Police brand did not see the need to make independent designs and therefore made a range of unisex sunglasses.
The Police range does not aim to create standout pieces, they are not overly bright nor overly creative in their designs, the range is created for more of a practical purpose. The sunglasses maintain a level of Italian chic that comes with the Police name but still a level of practicality. For women, the brand does not have the strong feminine designs that you would find at many high-end designers, rather it has a more edgy and urban approach for the more relaxed female.
The Police sunglasses range has been a great hit over time with celebrities and stylists alike. Celebrities are often seen wearing the brand that now includes a wide range of accessories including watches and more recently a clothing line. Many famous faces have leant their face to the brand including George Clooney, David Beckham and Bruce Willis.
