How To Build A Better Photography Portfolio

By Nichol Falin Brazzell

One of the great things about photography is that anyone can do it. While not just anyone will be able to take professional level pictures, the amateur can follow a few tips to produce photographs that he or she can feel very proud of. Browse the following tips to improve your pictures today.

Use the macro mode to get clear close-up pictures. Instead of fiddling with the lens every time you want a close-up of a small object, simply use the macro mode. Using the macro mode will allow you to get clear, close-up pictures with a soft focus.

Here is a handy photo tip! Learn about the shutter speeds. There are P, M, A, and S settings on your camera. The "P" stands for program mode. This is the fully automatic setting of your camera and it sets the aperture and shutter speed automatically for you. If you are not sure what you will shoot, use the "P" setting.

If possible, avoid using the flash that you find on most cameras nowadays. It tends to give the subject 'red eye', and it removes a lot of the shadow that can create depth in a picture. If you have to use a flash, such as an indoor nighttime shot, keep your subject away from walls. This way you won't end up with an ugly black shadow that resembles an outline.

If you want to take professional grade photos, you need a professional grade camera. It doesn't matter how perfect the shot was if your camera is inferior. You want to look at purchasing a dSLR camera to get the best photographs. This is what most photographers are using, and if you want quality photos like them, this is what you need as well.

If you are serious about advancing your photography skills, consider taking a photography class at your local community college or craft school. Even if you only want to do this as a hobby, you can learn so much from taking a class. You may even discover that this is more than a hobby, and the photography class may lead to a full-time career.

As stated in the introduction, photography is a very unique hobby. It affords the hobbyist a chance to make a profession, and to preserve memories for people. With a little guidance one can go from simple daytime picture taker to master photographer. This article offered some tips to help with that transition.
