How A Mascot Can Help Create Team Spirit

By Adriana Noton

From the days of the cavemen humans have superstitiously believe that specific objects, figures or animals have to power to bring good fortune. This belief in some type of benign supernatural force that is connected to a specific mascot as survived to this day. The vast majority of groups that have some common purpose boast some form of symbol that represent their group and that serve to provide some form of identity, just as a uniform would.

The origin of the term as it is understood in modern day society dates from the French word meaning witchcraft. Tongue in the check commentators observe that this must imply that even modern man still have an ingrained belief in the supernatural or at least some sort of force that have the power to influence events. This is perhaps the reason why some ultra conservative individuals and groups view lucky charms as evil and harmful.

When it comes to the question of what exactly a lucky charm should look like, there are no ready answers. The truth is that just about anything can be used to serve the purpose. Real humans wearing elaborate costumes are popular while others prefer to use animated images, a real person or even a symbol such as an ancient trophy or a ball used by a famous player.

The selection of a character to act as representative of a group is not always all that easy. Because it takes time to establish an identity, careful consideration should be given to the matter. Ideally, the symbol should be versatile for use in all kinds of environments and situations. Furthermore, it should stand out and project he norms and values of the particular group.

Even when a chosen symbol or talisman complies with all the technical and practical requirements, it is all wasted effort if it fails to rally the intended target groups around and behind it. A proper and thorough target group analysis is therefore vital. It is also important to create a legend and a history around the chosen symbol and this is exactly what the most famous mascots in history achieved.

It would be wrong to think that mascots are merely here for some good sports and cheer. They can serve an important motivating role and they have been used very successfully in marketing campaigns. It is not only specific products that are marketed, but also ideals, brands and individuals. In many cases, they serve as a visual reminder that can be far more powerful than conventional advertising.

Because mascots in modern society are in essence marketing tools, it is important to first establish the symbol before it can be expected to yield results. This means that a separate campaign must be launched to market the marketing tool. Most of the successful talismans have been established by following a multi pronged approach by means of promotions, toys, high visibility and competitions.

Millions of people can recall a specific mascot, or perhaps more than one, and instantly recall emotions and events connected to it. That is the true power of these symbols. They are able to become the symbol of a specific event, immediately triggering consciousness of specific groups or brands.
