When we visited a water park, on one of the slides, it flew out of my pocket.
This camera has got to be the most unintuitive point and shoot I've ever seen or used. I don't even care about the image quality, even if it were outstanding, the interface and poor design would steer me away. We took it in the pool the next day and noticed it had water in the battery compartment, even with the latch set to lock. Luckily we went back to the room and I had one day left to request a return with Amazon, and since it's defective they paid the return shipping.
I have not had a chance to see if it is waterproof or not after the repair. Does what it's built to do. Well with 4 kids we needed something tough. This is a great sturdy camera. I bought this because my wife and daughter both bought them when their previous cameras broke. I got sand in my previous Canon camera and it jams. Therefore I wanted a camera that would take decent pictures for the areas I wasn't comfortable carrying my wife's expensive (and more fragile) Nikon. Here's the pro's: I bought this camera for my husband who was asking me for a durable and easy to use under-water camera. I had to take the battery out in order for it to shut off. Just printed out the return forms, this camera is going back. Operation is aggravating. My wife and I saw this camera in Best Buy and she really liked it. This is the second Olympus Tough that I have own. The first one died after 3 years of taking it to the beach and eventually the seals give up and let water in (sea water).
One common complaint - slow start-up time - can be easily fixed by following directions in the manual: Turn "PW on Start-up" to off, this will keep the camera from loading the logo and the camera is immediately ready for use. Another common complaint is the time it takes in order to shoot the next picture.
The internal memory holds loads of images and they are a great quality. The camera has been dropped from a top bunk onto a tile floor and thrown across a playground into sand and performed perfectly afterwards! I highly recommend buying the extended warranty if you get this camera. This camera has many positive attributes that should make it attractive to the casual photographer or videographer (or even to serious hobbyists who might themselves unable to schlep full size gear). Well - it worked fine at the beach the first day - in the surf and on the sand - the second day we took it snorkeling - in less than 2 feet of water flashed a message saying "Lost Connection" - it then gave up completely. We did everything correctly, charged and loaded the battery at home - no sand, dust or obstruction to the waterproofing.
So all in all, I can't say that this camera was awful because it did have some pros that I think were beneficial to me and could be to other people. I bought this camera as a replacement for a compact point and shoot cannon.
