Analogue television signals are being switched off in the next year in the UK are going over to digital. Digital is a stronger service allowing more channels through your existing TV signal. There is no charge for the signal as this works with your current TV aerial.
A benefit of Digital TV is that it uses less broadcast space which means that after digital switchover, there will be more room for new services such as broadband, local TV and High Definition Television (HDTV).
Unfortunately, this means that you will have to make sure all your TVs can receive a digital signal.
Digital TV offers great new ways to enjoy the TV such as greater choice of TV channels, great features such as interactivity, on-screen listings, audio description and subtitling for people with visual and audio impairments. There will also be access to additional channels and services including premium channels(e.g sports, movies), telephony and better broadband options.
Notes :
How many TVs are there in your home?
You must get every TV digital ready before digital switchover.
Do you video programmes at the moment?
You will need a freeview HD recorder or digital TV recorder to record a programme you're not currently watching. Old video recorders will play and record what you're currently watching but that's all.
Current TV aerial
You shouldn't need to change your current aerial as the digital TV signal is compatible with it. With a Freeview box plugged into your aerial, you will be able to receiver digital services without any further costs.
Is radio affected?
The analogue radio signal is not affected by digital TV switchover.
Televisions
Any modern TV will work with the digital system when a Freeview box is plugged into it.
SCART sockets are the standard connection used by a Freeview box but freeview HD boxes use other connections such as HDMI. As long as your current TV has the same sort of connection as your Freeview box, you won't need to change it.
If you with to buy a new TV, make sure it carries the 'digital tick'. The 'digital tick' means that it is designed to continue working after the switchover.
