Up Close and Personal with the Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi Tablet

By Elizabeth Brugger

Those who had laptops initially gave the iPad an unenthusiastic reception, not seeing the capabilities of the brand-new device. Very quickly, however, the potentials of the iPad became recognized. As the industry caught on and Apple's accountants started rubbing their hands with glee, the other big computer and cell phone companies sat up and took notice. All of a sudden, Tablets could be found in all the sales outlets. And Dell's shareowners were going to be upset if they didn't try and obtain a piece of the market. The product Dell is putting its hopes on is what they're calling Streak 7 Wi-Fi Tablet. Whether this tablet makes the grade and is worth the money is what we will try to resolve in this article.

It's a good device for movies with a similar system to ipad movies downloads. It's better to recommend a gadget when the company that makes it has a good reputation - that, however, is not the case with Dell. Dell is one company that does not have a reputation for the quality of the products it makes. Dell also has a questionable record of providing customer service. After your product warranty runs out, you will be charged for customer service calls to the company - at least that is what a lot of customers claim. Purchasing a product from Dell may have future implications - and not just cost - which may well outweigh the smart savings from it being a comparatively cheap product.

The tablet uses the Android OS (this version is affectionately referrend to as Froyo), which means that it should let you multitask between a few different apps somewhat easily. You should be able to listen to Mp3s, keep your GPS data up-to-date, and be given notice of various things through the system's notification service without being constrained to keep any specific program open and running. Friends and business contacts will always be able to get hold of you on your Streak 7 tablet because it gives you access to your email accounts, including Gmail, relatively easily.

One of the great things about this tablet that was not a component of the initial iPad design is video chat. Video chat feature is available in this tablet through a front-facing panel camera and Qik software. Nonetheless, yes, there is a caveat: an individual with the same Dell Streak 7 tablet, or something compatible, presents no problem - otherwise, incommunicado you will remain. Simply put, the video chat feature is not all-encompassing in its application. Another good thing is that the Dell Streak 7 table has Blockbuster's On Demand service. Admittedly, though, Blockbuster's recent troubles have made us think twice about recommending the tablet.

Reviews at this point are few, but it does appear that a lot of people are wary as to the reasons why this tablet was developed. The unit's functionality is pretty limited through its inability to interact with devices that aren't compatible with it. Nevertheless, if you are desperate for a tablet computer and you t have a big budget, this tablet could be a great way to get used to the technology and find out for yourself if tablets really are for you. Bearing in mind the earlier caveats, do think about your purchase carefully prior to committing any money.
