How To Sketch Better

Mastering the art of sketching requires many hours of practice, However, I wish to shorten that time for you as much as possible, so I've compiled a list of common mistakes that beginner artist makes and turned them into a list of tips. These tips should help you to improve in your area of drawing much more quickly.

Tip 1: Don't obsess about being perfect. Sketching is not about being perfect. It's about letting your creativity flow and going with the rhythm.

The way to get better to to sketch a lot and you can't do that if you are worry about making every sketch perfect.

Tips 2: Train yourself to see lines in everything that you look at. Look for the horizontal and vertical lines. Follow the curves and focus on them.

By practicing this sketching tip, you will teach yourself to draw what you see and you'll begin to draw naturally as it becomes a habit.

Tip 3: Be aware of the position of your head while sketching. The slightest movement of your head can chance the perspective of what you are looking at and alter the look of your sketch.

It is very important to keep the perspective consistent through out the drawing process.

Tip 4: If you want to make an object look lighter, there is a way to do it without using an eraser. Simply put something darker next to it. This is the contrast principle at work and the brain can not tell the difference. Play around with this sketching tip and you'll find that you can do a lot of cool things.

Tip 5: Before you drive into a sketch, make light outlines of the shapes to make sure that everything will fit into the page. This way your proportions will look better and you won't find yourself running out of space in the middle of your sketch.

Tip 6: Speed up your sketching. By speeding up your sketching you forces yourself to be in the moment and allows yourself to be more creative. Your strokes will also be much more natural and have an air of spontaneity to it.

Tip 7: Don't be intimidated by objects that look complicated. Just break it up in to simple shapes and use those shapes to map out the object on your paper. That will give you a rough outline and a great place to start.

Tip 8: Shading is an important part of making any drawing look realistic, so pay attention to the light source when you draw. Notice how the different shadows are cast and capture that in your drawing.

Please don't underestimate these simple tips. They may be simple but if you heed them, you'll see great result in your sketching.
