The Origins of Celtic Tattoos

By Cj Tatts

Celts come from Europe (often the edges) and talk or spoke the Celtic Language (for example Welsh, Cornish). Celts not only had their own language, they also had their own unique culture and religion. The key Celtic areas are that of Brittany (France), Galicia (North West Spain), Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and Asturia (Northwards Spain).

The Celts stem back as far as the Iron Age where they lived in clans. The Celts controlled the majority of central Europe and by 700BC they also conquered the lands of Northerly Spain. The Celts were a force in The UK by 480BC. Celtic tribes continued to migrate to Britain and to dominate the country until the Roman Empire expanded in Europe pushing the Celts to the perimeters (often cuddling the Atlantic Coast). Between the 5th and eighth centuries AD the UK Celts had become an established cultural entity, whereas the Continental Celtic had principally disappeared..

Celtic Tattoos are my favorite type of forearm tattoos. Admittedly I'm biased as I have Celtic roots being from Cornwall, England. A traditional Celtic tattoo on the forearm or wrist is a neat place "and more increasingly we see intricate designs on the back and chest areas.

Celtic art is usually decorative which avoids the utilisation of straight lines and only occasionally using symmetry. Popular styles of Celtic art utilised for tattoos include Celtic crosses, Celtic knotwork, Celtic symbols and the Celtic love knot.

The Celtic cross is a favored design which is showed as a symbol that combines a cross with a ring surrounding the crossover. Current concepts surrounding Celtic crosses is they were used as an ancient measuring instrument for navigation, astronomy and/or surveying.

Celtic tattoos are customarily always done with black ink and the lines could be a mix of thick and terribly thick.

A Celtic Tattoo design is superb for folks of Celtic origins to show of their Celtic Heritage "but anybody can have a Celtic Tattoo "we don't mind "because they look super-cool. For folks of Celtic heritage, having a Celtic tattoo design is typically a way of expressing pride in ones heritage.
