They Lost Another Loyal Customer - Polaroid Digital Camera Critique

By Alexis Rivera

The third setting is holding the button down and it will continuous shoot photos. Having lost my last Stylus Tough, I upgraded to this model. While, I still think it is a good niche product, the startup time is terrible, and it does appear to take much longer to focus and snap pictures. With only one moving part, this tough camera is a super value if you are a bit hard on your kit as I am. I expected a lot with a tough camera, and it truly is waterproof, but make sure you slide the coking mechanism over or it won't be. I took it down to about 6 feet of salt water and it didn't miss a beat. The pictures were crisp, the video worked very well and I couldn't be happier.

This make it difficult to take a one handed shot. The body is VERY SLIPPERY and no texture to help with your grip. An as yet unfounded fear is that buttons and seals do not look particularly waterproof. I have not taken it underwater though, and I have no plans to.

While I will admit the shutter lag (time in between shots) is not the fastest it is also not the slowest and actually is about the same as any previous point and shoot I have owned in the past. Highly recommended! It's a good camera and probably would give 4 stars if it wasn't for the freezing problem. To get a quality shot it I feel like you have to select the correct camera setting first, which just adds time and annoyance. I've been using Canon Powershots the past 10 years and this camera doesn't even compare to the Canon's point and shoot capability.

Customer service has been less than helpful and I still haven't received a new camera over two months later. The 14MP produces sharp images, auto focus finds the right subject, waterproof (used it in fresh & salt water), movies work great (very minimal wind noise).

It does not have the zoom capabilities as some other cameras. In even the slightest low light, the image quality was extremely noisy. The panorama was also terrible - it was better to do it on manual, which is very time consuming to line up the images, than the "easy" auto.

If you read the manual on it and learn the Canon beforehand it's a pretty cool camera, but personally when I'm in the heat of the moment for an awesome shot I don't want to be fiddling with buttons and trying to remember how to get to whatever setting I need. I give this camera an A+, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what improvements they make on it in the next couple years. Only caution I have is that the camera has limited capability in low light conditions. It's best to bring along a full size camera if you are shooting in low light or at least use a steady rest for the Stylus Tough. Managed to pick it out with a fine wire and it is still working OK. Not a good design.
