The Transformation And Evolution Of Scandinavian Airline Carriers

By Homer Ignatious Xavier

A private investor and several airlines formed Scandinavian Airlines shortly after World War 2. The reality that international travel was on the rise was the reason for the alliance creation. The reality of the war ended made the air ways once again safe to fly. Once the company was created, the flight operations in the European skies took place. Using the existing fleet assets and infrastructure helped. The result over the years to come was a dedicated effort to provide quality service as well as taking advantage of new alliances.

If you fly quite a bit, you probably have noticed that each airline has the flag of their country of origin. Doing this typically represents pride in the homeland that most people have. Scandinavian Airlines has been about sharing since the beginning when they formed as a partnership and business alliance. The three countries that jointly on this airline are Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. A significant share of this airline is actually publicly owned and funded. The largest air carrier that is based in Scandinavian territory actually is SAS or Scandinavian Airlines. 30 countries, with around 180 destinations, represents the scope of the service that this airline provides.

SAS Braathens is the official name of the Norway component of Scandinavia Airlines. There was an additional business, or division, of SAS that was called Scandinavian Airlines Norge. Included in all of this changing was SAS Norway and the removal of Braathens from the original name. This seemingly confusing name change was actually not that bad. The arrangement of this company in 2007 is still unified in regard to SAS Norwegian operations. Scandinavian Airlines Norge takes care of domestic flight operations within the country of Norway. Norge also controls global flights coming out of Norway.

This set-up of airlines around the world was part of a continuing plan which came together in the shape of the alliance. Then, in 2001, there was a major structural reorganization resulting in SAS ownership being spread out among three Scandinavian countries and public ownership through stocks. Denmark, Sweden and Norway are the three countries concerned with this. Nevertheless, the shareholding of public stocks of the business lingers at 50%.

SAS at the present maintains its heritage as a worldwide air carrier. Internationally, SAS has long-distance routes that cover destinations in North America and Asia. Their two main hubs in Stockholm and Copenhagen are the launching points for most of their international travelers. Scandinavian Airlines International-SAS is the division that handles all intercontinental routes along with any sales units outside Scandinavia. They employ almost 1,000 people. The European Traffic Divisions of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway operate independently from the Scandinavian Airlines International-SAS Division. Scandinavian Airlines has really come into their own during the first decade of the 21st century. This is due largely to the smart business efforts involving business partnerships. The company is aggressive and has been all throughout their history. For the good of the company however, they aren't afraid to enter into agreements and partnerships that will benefit the company and it's consumers. Because of the successful business practices, we have seen SAS weather many storms during it's more than 60 years in business. There have been several instrumental figures in the life of SAS who have helped make the company financially stronger.

No matter what method you use to travel, staying at a nice hotel is always a top goal. Be sure you do some thorough research before you leave, so that you can select a great hotel.
