We will cover the Introduction and the first part or the Part A portion of the song in this lesson. The second lesson in this series will address the last portion or the Part B portion of the song Can't Buy Me Love.
Your first objective is to work of the effective brushing technique of the chords in the introduction. This is implemented with the Thumb of the Right Hand with a smooth, slow, brushing action over the strings.
Not only should you hold your left hand fingers in place for the brushed chords in the introduction, but for the most part, hold them for the notes that follow as well. This will create a smooth, effortless mood for the introduction.
Rhythm Chords For The Song
The correct rhythm chords are also placed in the TAB and notation for your convenience. The chord diagrams are located above the notation score. Not only can you refer to these diagrams for the rhythm portion of the song, they can also be very useful for giving you "clues" as the chords you will need to form for your finger-style melody.
Obviously, for those of you interested in only the rhythm chords, these will come in very handy. As with many finger-style songs, this arrangement uses the standard alternating bass for the majority of the lesson. This is accomplished with the thumb of the right hand.
Also, the lead or "melody" notes for the piece are picked with the index, middle and ring finger of the right hand. You should attempt to hold the left hand fingering for the chord forms wherever possible and only adjust fingering as needed to play certain melody notes.
By this you will be able to play the song much smoother and with a lot less effort as you achieve experience with this method of finger-style guitar. Just keep in mind that you should only deviate from the indicated chord diagrams with the left hand fingers when absolutely necessary.
Notes On The F Chord
F Major chords always present some problems for the finger-style guitarist.Thankfully, there are several manners you can play the F chord that are perfectly acceptable. The method that is used in this lesson uses the left hand thumb to play the 6th or bass string for the F chord in lieu of playing the more typical full bar chord.
It is of course up to you which method you use. The object is to achieve a certain comfort in playing this in finger-style fashion and you will develop your own preferences and playing style over time.
Syncopation Notes of Can't Buy Me Love
If you play any arrangements by Chet Atkins at all, you soon realize that he uses quite a bit of syncopation in his playing style. What is syncopation? This means that certain melody notes are moved out of their normally played location, which creates a break or pause in an unexpected location.
The first syncopated note is shown in the TAB in the first note of the Part A portion of the TAB and notation. For this example, study the last note in the 7th measure of the lesson material.
Normally this note is the kick-off note, which would be played as the first beat of the 8th measure. Rather, it is moved "backward" by 1/2 beat and played in the 7th measure instead, created syncopation. As you play through this version of Can't Buy Me Love, you will find several more examples of this often-used technique.
