Karl Benz - A keen inventor

By Colin N Wayper

Karl Benz was a keen inventor, offering the modern automobile to the roads. His motorwagen however was noisy and kicked out some smelly pollution causing some unhappiness amongst the public. To counteract their complaints, Benz wrote to The Grand Ducal Authorities requesting permission to drive on the roads. He was promptly presented with a drivers licence agreeing to this.

In Britain, the first car was not driven on the roads until 1903. At the same time it was tested, the driving licence was presented also, making it a necessity to have. As there was no need to pass a test at this time, it meant that gaining a licence was easy as there were no competency measures in place. As a result, accidents were plentiful. By 1935, the government rolled out the first ever driving test carried out by service men and police.

Over the years, the driving test has advanced, becoming more complex in line with safety and the further features a car has to offer. Back in the 1970's, hand signals were required for turning left and right, and considered an extremely important factor. Moving towards the early 90's, reverse parking was a necessity when sitting a test.

Questions were asked as part of a driving test with regards to the highway code. By 1996, this wasn't enough and lead the government to propose a theory test, consisting of multiple choice questions to be answered under exam conditions. At first this test was sat using a pen and paper. With technology ever growing, this is now completed at a computer. To accompany the theory test is the Hazard Perception test, first taken in 2002, designed to alert drivers to the possible dangers lurking on any road.

Of course, you can't sit a driving test without taking a course of lessons. You need to learn the basics at first, taking things steady so you can build up to manoeuvres, motorway driving and above all gain some confidence. Your driving instructor needs to be patient and offer you all the help required to get you up to test standard.

Choosing a driving instructor can be executed in many ways. Some rely on word of mouth from others, or go to the big, well known names. Others go for the cheapest whilst some believe no expense should be spared for the best lessons available. The important factors to consider are pass rate, professionalism and experience. Using an instructor who has all of these offers the confidence to pass.

Having decided on an instructor, he or she will accommodate your needs, collecting you from a destination of your choice and dropping you back there. Being nervous is not an issue for competent instructors who will offer guidance and reinforcement throughout each and every lesson.

Driving instructors will cater to every need. New drivers, nervous drivers, pupils who have failed a test, refresher courses and more. Should it become apparent that an automatic may be more suitable your instructor will suggest this and swap cars on your next lesson.

Research driving schools and read some reviews before settling for a driving instructor. Get this right and you could be on the road to freedom sooner than you think!
