Piece Your Wardrobe Together in Kansas City

By Molly Black

The phrase "buy local" seems to be everywhere these days, mostly when referring to purchasing local produce.

Baldwin Men's Shop debuted in August and serves as a flagship store for the Baldwin brand of men's and women's denim and clothing. Currently the line appears in 20 retailers worldwide, including Standard Style, also owned by the Baldwins.

This fall he suggests locals "buy a pair of selvage denim jeans," crafted on old-style shuttle looms. "We suggest coming into the shop to meet with one of our denim experts to get the perfect fit." Baldwin also recommends adding "a jean jacket paired back to a tailored trouser" to the must-have list.

Heather Gretter of Clique Boutique opened her store along with her husband, James, in April 2011. "Our main focus is quality," says Gretter, who stresses that the typical Clique customer is sophisticated and elegant always.

"They're not necessarily looking for very trendy pieces but for elegant classics to wear year after year," she says. "Other boutiques focus on a customer who is 30 and under; my median customer is 55 and older."

"People assume when a boutique opens, it's for someone young and tiny. I really try to cater to a wide range of ages and sizes. We go from a size 0 up to 16. We have real clothes for real women," says Gretter.

For fall fashion, Gretter anticipates classic and tailored pieces with clean lines inspired by menswear: "Beautiful wool and cashmere sweaters and coats, and wide-leg pants are being shown. There is a lot of color in the fall lines. Olive is making a big comeback, but look to magentas and pinks, too."

Color is another trend spotted by Heather Hanson, co-owner with Wynne Foster of In Clover Boutique. "The color palette is leaning toward brownscamels and chocolate browns with lots of layering."

Hanson predicts a little breathing room for those donning skinnies: "Leggings are big, but skinny jeans are going out of style. The new look for denim is a thinner boot-cut or a wide-leg trouser."

In Clover, which opened in March 2011, strives to create an ambience for women who want to dress casually but look stylish doing so. "The main thing we wanted to provide was a friendly and comfortable shopping experience. We never want anyone to feel intimidated when walking into In Clover," says Hanson.

In Clover team is always on the search for something truly unique, but purchase from a cost-conscience standpoint. "I still feel people want to find something really cute but don't want to spend a lot of money," says Hanson.

Regardless of your style preferences, the boutiques throughout the Kansas City area make buying local threads a breeze.
